vladimir Propp (Research)
Vladimir Propps theory is basically that all fairytales have the same narrative structure. For example, there would be a villan, a hero, and a happily ever after. An example of Propp's theory -

13. How do you plan to use digital technology in your 3 products?
For the production of my 3 products I plan to use a variety of different digital technology to not only reach my target audience but to also illustrate the skills I have learnt during this course. During the process of making our digipak I plan to use a still camera to take a record of our work and use on my blog. I plan to also use a still camera to take photos for out actual digipak. These photos will be relevant to the image we are trying to create for out artist and will generate interest throughout our audience helping to promote her. To make the mock up of my digipak I used paint and Microsoft PowerPoint these are not the programmes i will eventually use but i found them less time consuming and easier for now. We also used Power Point to present our pitch.
To film our music video we will use a camera. We have already had a chance to use this on our lip sync tutorial and remember how to use it from last year. To edit our footage we will use Final Cut Pro we also used this to create our anamatic which shows we can use the programme for a variety of media types.
We have used all types of websites for research. Using youtube we were able to look at videos to give us ideas for our videos and look at the conventions of each genre. We then used Vimeo to look at previous student work to see what we could do and what we shouldn't do. Using the Internet is helpful because it is quick and easy to use blogging means that other students can read our work which is beneficial in many ways. It is also a big aspect in our target audiences lives and therefore out video will reach them quicker once we release it on the Internet on a site such as YouTube or Vimeo.
14. How have you used conventions from real media text in your planning?
Part of our planning process involved watching the original music video of our choosen song. We found it boring and un-imaginative and felt in didnt really convey the artist and her personality very well. We want our video to be completely different to this and have decided use a lot of editing due to our limited resources and no budget. Using Vimeo gave us an idea to what looked good and what didn't when it came to editing and showed us all the different types of edits we have access to.
To gain ideas and ensure our music video conforms to our genre we looked at lots of different videos on Youtube surrounding the genre of music. We found that a lot of the videos used big scenes in massive raves which we don't have access too. However we can follow the fast paste editing that is very popular in this genre. The videos also gave us an idea on costume and makeup which seems to be very festival-like.
Our next task is to make our digipak to do this we plan to look at another artists within the same genre and at the same place in the industry. We will look at there choosen costumes, make-up, location and extra editing to gain ideas for our own. It is very important for us to look at what will make our didgipak individual, how it will be appealing to my audience and be conventional of the artist. All this is relevent to our final musice video.
15. What have you learned about research and planning a production, compared to AS?
When looking at the comparison between the AS course and the A2 course it must be noted that this years course is much more flexible. With not all the tasks being obligatory it demands much more depth and therefore takes a lot more dedication. There is also a lot more to consider when targeting our audience this year as different genres hold different conventions therefore our research has had to be more thorough.
Unlike our AS course our blogs will be marked serperately to our final piece and exam. Therfore it require a lot more creativity to not only make it look pleasing to the eye but also to show my our wide range of skills throughout the different media types. I have tried to use different fonts, colours, a variety of photos and programmes to present my work such as 'Wordle'.
We will also be marked differently in our planning stage as this year being marked on our individual involvement moresore then last year. Every piece of planning must be documented in our blogs to show our input, skills and development throughout the tasks.

Analysis of a music video *4 key concepts (research)
This is the video for Dj Zinc and Ms Dynamite - Wile out. The genre is drum and bass and Dj Zinc is very well established in the underground scene. The video conforms to the genre, but is different to what both artists would usually do.
The setting for the video is in a quite run down club. We see lots of graffiti as Ms Dynamite comes down the stairs in the building, which adds to the underground feel of the video. The dark clothing we see on Ms dynamite is her own style, and is dressed up with lots of jewellery, which makes her stand out as the main participant.
The music video is linear to the drum and bass genre, and the editing is varied between quite slow shots and fast paced. The fast paced editing is shown whilst Ms Dynamite is performing the song to an audience, creating a energised atmosphere. The slowed down shots are of her walking down the stairs to the stage are good for letting the audience get a feel of the surrounding's.
Final Song Choice (Planning)
Our video will differ from the katy b video quite a lot. Our idea's for the video are that we would have 2 locations maximum and create the video using a lot of editing. Katy B's video is purely based on locations and mise en scene.

Final Song Choice
Katy B - Louder
Our final song choice is Katy B - Louder, our video is going to be very different from the original, it will have no narrative and will be vastly edited. Unlike the original that just sees the artist walking around various locations out video is going to be filmed against the green screen and a white wall focussing on the artists image and the way the video is edited.

Vladimir Propp
vladimir propp's theories"Contending that fairy tales could be studied and compared by examining their most basic plot components, Formalist Vladimir Propp developed an analysis that reduced fairy tales to a series of actions performed by the dramatis personae in each story. Propp argued that all fairy tales were constructed of certain plot elements, which he called functions, and that these elements consistently occurred in a uniform sequence. Based on a study of one hundred folk tales, Propp devised a list of thirty-one generic functions, proposing that they encompassed all of the plot components from which fairy tales were constructed.Use of Proppian analysis reveals that fairy tales do share several similarities as far as basic plot elements. However, attempted Proppian analyses of several tales reveals that his claim of a uniform plot progression does not hold. Propp’s analysis also fails to recognize the importance of such story components as tone, mood, characterization, and writing style just to name a few. According to Propp, a cohesive story can be formed by connecting a series of any set of the thirty-one functions in order. This project explores this component of Propp’s argument by randomly generating a fairy tale from selected functions. Each function has several passages written specifically to express that function, and the generator will randomly select one passage for each selected function. While each passage appropriately expresses its respective plot element, the tone, characters, and settings may vary. The randomly generated fairy tale demonstrates that it is necessary to consider several other elements besides plot components in order to create a cohesive and well-written tale."basically he is saying all folk tales and fairy tales are the same.vilan - hero |

This video is a good example of what we're aiming to achieve with our music video. The editing is really well done and is sort of the same thing we're looking to do. The colour catching effect of the black and white and the lips being the only colour in the shot is a really good effect.

Review of a Previous students work - Research
Becca, Benny, Kris & Tope from 283goswell on Vimeo.
In this music video that was created by previous students, there are a number of effects used. Its is a fast pace editing video which fits in with the genre of the song. There are a number of close ups used which are usually present in pop videos, i think the video complements the song. Although i rally like this video there are few shots that don't fit in with the rest of video and it is clear they were filmed at last minute. This is clear through the costume and make up which is very laid back which doesn't fit in with the other fashionable costumes that are featured that are featured in the music video.

Mood Board
We tried to portray as much of the concept of our music video as we could on the mood board, by looking at the mood board you can clearly see it is going to be a bold and fashionable video.
Vladimir Propp
Vladimir Propp's theory is all that fairytales are constructed in certain plot elements and follow the same narrative structure.
All fairytales feature:
The villain
The hero
The donor - helps the hero by providing a magic object
The dispatcher - sends the hero on his way
The false hero
The helper - helps the hero
The princess
The princess's dad
Many music videos follow the same narratives and feature many of the characters in fairy tales an example of this is 50 cent - Do You Think About Me. the roles have been switched as the woman is the villain which is not the conventual way it happens in fairytales.

Final song choice
We have choosen Katy B's song Louder for our final song choice.
To make the video different from the original one we plan to use a larger variety of shots and a lot more editing and use her singing in shots rather then show a day in the life of Katy B as her original video shows. This means that our video will not follow a story but will take aspects of the song and amplify them.
Words brought to mind when watching the video will be:

Lip Synch tutorial
Sister Sledge - His the greatest dancer
As Sarah is going to be the person featured in our music video we decided that she will be the person to learn and sign the song in the lip synch task, whilst Lauren, Rosa and Julekha filmed. It took Sarah roughly ten minuets to learn the words of the song that we had been given then we began filming.
We filmed the shots from a variety of angles, with sarah singing the song a number of times to the camera at different angles it made it easier to edit. It took us about 20 minutes to complete the lip synching task as we found it easy to film and didn't come across any problems.
We occurred some minor problems whist editing our video as a couple of the shots wasn't filmed with the music track started from the start which meant we couldn't mark the beat of the track to the video. As all the tracks wasn't starting at the start of the clip we wasn't able to use the opening that we filmed for the video. Once this problem was resolved we found it easy to edit our video.
From the task we learnt a number of things about getting are filming and editing correct, we now know that all shots must include the track stating from the beginning. once we had finished editing the lip synch task we knew it was clear that Sarah was the perfect person to feature in our own music video.

Review of previous students work (research)
My group has choosen to film our video in fairly plain locations and jazz it up with lots of editing. The reason we have choosen to do this is because it fits the alternative/ dance genre of our music. When looking through previous videos A2 students have done there was one that was very similar to what we are looking to do. This was a video done last year to the song 'Bum like you'. It was very helpful to get a chance to look at the video because we could analyse what went well and what didnt work so well.
The aspects of the video I liked were:
Becca, Benny, Kris & Tope from 283goswell on Vimeo.
The aspects of the video I liked were:
- The side shots of the girl in the tunnel which was almost so dark it was just her siloutte with one side of her features showing..
- The shots where they had had edited the colouring making it very light, pink or blue.
- The shots where they had used editing to make multiple shots appear on the screen in a grid like manner or reflected one shot to make the singer look like she was singing to herself.
- Filming with not enough light
- Keeping the colour schemes correct throughout to ensure shots do not stand out and look out of place.
- Making sure we have a large variety of angels and different edits on shots
- Using a actress that is willing to perform

researching use of the internet to promote music
Although it is becoming more and more common for artists to use the Internet to distribute their work and make it popular enough to be signed this was not always the case. As web 2.0 sites become a more and more popular way to communicate and socialise they are the perfect place for artists to distribute there music encouraging listeners to show their friends. Not only this but it means the music is accessible from anywhere that has internet which is everywhere in the 21st century.
One of the first artists to use this technique was Lily Allen. Near the end of 2005 after creating several demo songs Lily created a Myspace profile, which was still a fairly new web 2.0 site, where she made her recordings public. A contract was signed shortly after with the label Regal Recordings, as the views on MySpace rose to tens of thousands.
Kate Nash was is another Artist who used the internet to publicise her music. Nash started her career in 2005. After several gigs, she uploaded her music to MySpace. She found a manager for herself before seeking producers for her music.
Radio Head are a band that have also used the Internet to promote their music. Their 7th album 'in rainbows' was released on their website where fans could pay whatever price they wanted, including nothing at all, as a voluntary contribution. 2 million downloads were reportedly sold by the day of release, but the band's management did not release official sales figures, claiming that the Internet-only distribution was intended to boost later retail sales. In May 2009, the band began new recording sessions with producer Nigel Godrich. A few months later, in August Radiohead released two singles from these sessions on their website. First, "Harry Patch (In Memory Of)", was recorded in tribute to the recently deceased Harry Patch, the last surviving British soldier to have fought in World War I. The song was sold for £1, with proceeds donated to the British Legion.
