Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin's theory is that narratives that are traditional in films and novels doesnt always apply to many pop videos. Pop videos narratives are approached in a different way form films and novels which makes them differ. Goodwin feels that as the lyrics of pop videos are mostly of a repuatition most of the images are repeated to fit in with the choruses or lines which makes it difficult to follow a narrative.

Goodwin makes points of the different narrative structures in pop videos:
  • Pop videos follow a song rather than a story, many songs do not follow a story so it is hard to follow a traditional narrative
  • Singers are posed as the narrator and as a character
  • In many cases the singer looks directly at the camera delivering a performance

Disjuncture
In the mark Ronson & The Business - The Bike Song the video features Mark Riding a bike throughout the video. This is known as disjuncture which means a slight connection is made between the lyrics and the video or where the viedo and lyrics contradicts. In this case there is a connection being made through the bike. By using the bike in the video it gives you a stronger idea of the meaning of the song.

Illustration
Eminem Feat. Dido - Stan, tells a strong story throughout the video. It gives you a strong sense of what the song is about. This video shows Illustration throughout the video - this is where a story of the lyric which this video clearly does. I think it was really smart how this video has been constructed, it is almost like you are watching a miniture film. There is clearly a narrative here which follows a linear structure with a beggining, middle and end.

Amplification
Amplification is where a video introduces new meanings that do not relate to the lyrics but add different meanings. This accures is many pop videos. An artist that uses ampliflication in many of there videos is Florence and the Machine, many of her videos do not relate to the lyrics and create a new meaning for whats being sang in the video. An example of one of her videos that do this is her cover and re-release of the song You've Got The Love

Lip synch tutorial

In lesson we were given a camera, a c-d player and a song to learn and were directed to go and film some of the song using a variety of different camera angels.

What skills did you learn through this activity?
I didn't learn many skills during this activity as we had already been taught how to lip sync. The only thing I did learn was how to edit multiple shots on top of each other at the same time.
What did you find most challenging?
The most challenging aspect of this activity was syncing all the shots to the one song as it required a lot of skill and patience. However improvement in this aspect of my editing, i feel, will come with practice.

What new tools on Final Cut Pro. did you learn to use?
I had not used the razor blade tool before which made cutting the shots quicker and more efficient however apart from this I had used all the tools however this time I just used them differently.

What observations did you make about how editing differs in music videos, compared to producing the opening to a thriller film?
The editing in music videos is a lot more complicated; having to cut to the beat of the music, making sure everything is synced properly and ensuring you make use of different camera angels to make the video interesting.

Lip Synch Tutorial.

What skills did you  learn through this acctivity?
Learnt how to put all the different shots on top of eachother instead of alongside eachother. Also we put the bladie technique to use.

What did you find most challenging?
I found the editing with the different shots on top of eachother most difficult.

What new tools on Final Cut Pro. did you learn to use?
All of the tools where the same as last year however, there where different ways of how to put them to use.

What observations did you make about how editing differs in music videos, compared to producing the opening to a thriller film?
In a thriller film we put each shot alongside eachother however, during the music video we had to put each shot on top of eachother. Also i learnt that the slower the beat your music video has, the less editing shots you need and, the faster your music video, more editing shots are required.
Roll Deep ft Jodie Connor - Goodtime.

The editing of this video is fast pased with lots of dancing, also in a balck cab. It is evening time and there are lots of fast forwarded cars.

The tone of the music is very up beat, loud and lively.

The genre of the music video is dance pop and this is conveyed well through the video.

No distruption occured in this video - equilibrium.
            - having a good time, drinking, dancing after work or weekend - conveyed through song/lyrics

(props: drinks, bright lights cars, girls dressed tarty and colourful)

Lesson 3

Example - Watch the sun come up

Example is an English artist grenre ranging between pop, electronic and dance he discribes his music as "Dysfunctional Electro-Pop" creating a different type of sound thats out there at the presant time. This perticular music video is not dissimular from any other music video out now in that genre, the use of cartoon drawings are used various times thorugh out the video which brings an individual element to the video.

The structure follows a linear narrative, using cartoon drawings to split the two locations of the video. one being in london and the other at the beach. The narrative and the lyrics relate as there a number of reference made linking the lyric and the clip e.g when the lyric "you in that red dress What a pairingI kept staring" is said you see Example sitting there staring at the girl in a red dress. These reference happen a number of times throughout the video. There is no disruption or equilibrium in this video.

There is a number of edting in this video, in the first 30 seconds there are 20 different edits most of them are visable but alot of them have been done very suttle. Theres alot of different things going on in the video but they all flow together and the two different sonarios fit in with eachother. In all i think that the video goes with the genre and song very well.

Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin feels that not all videos follow Todorov's theory of the traditional narrative analysis. He feels because music videos have different audiences, purposes and follow songs which often do not follow the traditional narrative structure. They therefore have to reach out to their audiences in different ways for example;
  • often a music video will repeat following the repetition of the chorus in the song to familiarise the audience with the genre and lyrics.
  • A song, and therefore a video must come to an end within an average of three minutes - often it is brought to a climax or constantly repeated before fading away
  • Some videos are autonomous from the music they spring from. Sometimes the music video is produced with a visual pleasure which encourages repetitive viewing therefore promoting the music. Music videos are also used to promote films.

This video is an RnB song by Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland called Dilemma and follows Goodwins Illustration theory. By doing so it tells the story of the lyric; Nelly falls in love with a girl who has just moved to his block but already has a boyfriend however after admitting his love Kelly leaves him and lives happily ever after with Nelly.

This video is a hip hop/rap song by various Young Money Artists called 'Bedrock'. It follows Goodwins amplification theory by taking the concept 'bedrock' and amplifying it by making the whole video about a massive sleepover.

This video is an

This video is Michael Jackson's 'Man In The Mirror' and follows Goodwins Disjuncture theory. By doing so it contradicts the positive lyrics with the shocking and horrific images showing the desperate needs of homeless, starving people and people of war.

Other points Goodwin makes are:
  • Pop videos often have easily recognisable features; eg Michael Jacksons yelp and twirl
  • Particularly true of heavy metal and hip hop videos women are deliberately presented provocative and sexy as objects of male desire.
  • Older bands who wish not to alienate previous audiences often show their younger days
  • Videos written for movies often incorporate some of the footage from the movie

Lesson 3

This is M.I.A's video for her song 'XXXO'. The genre of her music ranges between hip hop, electronica, dance, alternative and world music. However her music video does'nt really conform to music videos of these perticular genres. By using a dark background, golds, reds, pinks and indian style imagery she almost creates her own video genre. Her clothing again is very her own style; quirky, slightly crazy and exciting however despite this with her red lipstick and saucy posing she still looks sexy.

In her video M.I.A has challaged a typical linear music video presenting us with a varitey of very animated shots. She has based the concept of the video on the words 'xxxo' from her song lyrics, these letters appear in all different shapes and sizes throughout the video. The video revolves around her with no other actors present really making the audience focus on her as an artist.

Although there is alot of editing in the video the pace of the edits alter from fast to slow matching the different parts of the song. In the video reflection, anitmation, colour contrast, fades and manipulation of time are used to create a busy, bursting with life M.I.A world.
