Andrew Goodwin

Andrew Goodwin's theory is that narratives that are traditional in films and novels doesnt always apply to many pop videos. Pop videos narratives are approached in a different way form films and novels which makes them differ. Goodwin feels that as the lyrics of pop videos are mostly of a repuatition most of the images are repeated to fit in with the choruses or lines which makes it difficult to follow a narrative.

Goodwin makes points of the different narrative structures in pop videos:

• Pop videos follow a song rather than a story, many songs do not follow a story so it is hard to follow a traditional narrative
• Singers are posed as the narrator and as a character
• In many cases the singer looks directly at the camera delivering a performance

Disjuncture
In the mark Ronson & The Business - The Bike Song the video features Mark Riding a bike throughout the video. This is known as disjuncture which means a slight connection is made between the lyrics and the video or where the viedo and lyrics contradicts. In this case there is a connection being made through the bike. By using the bike in the video it gives you a stronger idea of the meaning of the song.

Illustration
Eminem Feat. Dido - Stan, tells a strong story throughout the video. It gives you a strong sense of what the song is about. This video shows Illustration throughout the video - this is where a story of the lyric which this video clearly does. I think it was really smart how this video has been constructed, it is almost like you are watching a miniture film. There is clearly a narrative here which follows a linear structure with a beggining, middle and end.



Amplification
Amplification is where a video introduces new meanings that do not relate to the lyrics but add different meanings. This accures is many pop videos. An artist that uses ampliflication in many of there videos is Florence and the Machine, many of her videos do not relate to the lyrics and create a new meaning for whats being sang in the video. An example of one of her videos that do this is her cover and re-release of the song You've Got The Love
