Lesson 3

This is M.I.A's video for her song 'XXXO'. The genre of her music ranges between hip hop, electronica, dance, alternative and world music. However her music video does'nt really conform to music videos of these perticular genres. By using a dark background, golds, reds, pinks and indian style imagery she almost creates her own video genre. Her clothing again is very her own style; quirky, slightly crazy and exciting however despite this with her red lipstick and saucy posing she still looks sexy.

In her video M.I.A has challaged a typical linear music video presenting us with a varitey of very animated shots. She has based the concept of the video on the words 'xxxo' from her song lyrics, these letters appear in all different shapes and sizes throughout the video. The video revolves around her with no other actors present really making the audience focus on her as an artist.

Although there is alot of editing in the video the pace of the edits alter from fast to slow matching the different parts of the song. In the video reflection, anitmation, colour contrast, fades and manipulation of time are used to create a busy, bursting with life M.I.A world.
