Evaluation - Question 4

The feedback that was recieved at the pictures was svery possisitive, all the people who gave feedback liked it obviously nothing is perfect and they all had things that we could improve on, none of the being major.

Feedback one

From this feedback it is clear that the things she thought could of been improved were having more people in the video, this may be because people got bored of looking just one person. But as a group we personally thought that having one person in the video was the right thing to do as it focused on one person; the artist, as she was the main focuss of the song.

Feedback Two

From this feedback the thing he thought who could of been improved was the lip syncing, some was out of sync. After looking carefully at the video i noticed that the bit of footage that was out of sync by just a tiny bit was the part of the grid with the lips saying louder. We did work really hard on trying to sync up the video and sound perfectly, the grid was a really complicated thing to do.

I choose to look at these two peices of feedback in particular as they were the once that were most honest about the things that wasn't quite right and needed improvement. Things that wasn't mentioned for good or bad which mean they wasn't pefect enough. Were the amount of shots that were featured in the video, and now looking back i think that maby we could of included different kind of shots that we would of put effects on. From the feedback i think it is aparent that the editing and effects were done really well and didnt need imporving. The editing to the beat was really good and kept the pace of the video, which fitted in with the genre conventions.

In my opinion i think the video is really good but its not the way that i imagined, i imagined it to have alot more effects but the time wehad to create the music video there wasn't enough time. One aspect of the video that was well recieved was the panel grid with the lips, i also really like this element of the video, it was the one ideas that we had that was kept the same throughout the process of planning and filming and it is one of my favourite parts of the video along with the bit where Sarah is dancing and we put a flashing effect on it. One thing that was praised was our editing and effects, we put colour glows on alot of our clips and changed the speed.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The audience feedback is mainly positive with a few things we could improve on. When we showed it to our classmates here are the main points everyone made. It must be kept in mind however that not all the people in our class conform to our original target audience and although their feedback is helpful it can not be said to be exactly accurate.

The main points we got were:

  • Varied amount of camera angles - close ups are maintained which engages the audience.
  • Edited to the beat
  • Use of camera shots to the beat is experimental and well thought of
  • A good use of effects which emphasizes the genre of the song and beat - the effect that is 'fuzzy' illustrates the vibrant atmosphere created which we be in a club making it generic to the genre.
  • Make-up is effective and fits with the genre
  • The artists clothing ranges from shot to shot and their colours seem to contrast with the background.
  • Nice locations that conform to the genre of the piece
  • The repetition of the split screen of the lips is nice and links the video together
I feel all this feedback is fairly accurate; we spent a lot of time concentrating on mise en scene ensuring we had the correct clothing, make-up, accessories and locations. Looking at my final video I think that the mise-en scene is one of my best achieved aspects of the video. The hair and make up we chose are all similar to videos of the same genre we watched and changes throughout the video making it un-repetitive. This is the same with the clothing which not only fits the genre but had a bigger impact as my feedback shows colours seem to contrast with the background'. The locations we choose had fairly plain backgrounds but allowed us to position our artist at different levels and in different positions which I feel created variation throughout my video. The edits we did use on the video where all effective however when evaluating my final product myself I feel that if had more time and experience in using final cut pro some of the edits would not be so random.

This is an example of one the the edits which I felt was random. The reason being that it was a shot that had been edited placed in the middle of a sequence of un-edited shots which made it look fairly random.

Like my own opinion the class liked the grid we did of the lips which I feel was one of the main original specific ideas that we kept from the beginning to the end and was effective. One thing that deemed to be very worth wile was the amount of footage we got and the variations of angels we made sure we took the time to get. This again has ensured our video is not too repetitive even though we actually only filmed in about five locations. If we had more time I would of liked to get a couple more shots as I think by the end it could be argued that the video edges on being repetitive.

The one main point that we were told could have been improved was:

  • The editing to the beat of the music
Because our song is quite fast pace it was at times hard to edit to the beat. It is conventional of our genre to increase the speed of editing as the song begins to speed up or slow down as the beat begins to drop. I agree with the feedback and feel that we should have taken more time in matching the editing too the speed of the beat of the song. However I feel this as well as the editing we choose use these are the only big two points that let us down.

how did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used a vary of media technologies when completing my media work. These varied though out the process of this course from using vimeo, youtube and google in planning to cameras and tripods at production to quark express and photoshop in post production and blogger through out. In the videos below I have talked about some of the technologies I used.

In planning I also used websites such as Da font which is a website that provides different font types. To used this I simply looked through the various fonts until I found a font I felt was appropriate for my genre. I then typed in the words I wanted and took a screen shot of this importing it after into photoshop to put on my digipak.

In post production I also used google to search up various artists similar to my own. Once I had found their actual websites using the search engine I clicked on the various links throughout the website paying attention to how they were using image, colours and different fonts to not only promote themselves but to also create a link between their videos and digipaks.

Once I had collected my footage for the video I used Final cut pro to edit it. I selected the clips I wanted to import and imported them. Placing them on the time line I decided what order I wanted them on a dragged them at them sides to make the longer or shorter.

An aspect that we did not learn last year was syncing. To do this we had to drag a music track into the timeline and then make a mark on a certain work. Taking a shot where we had filmed this word being sang we then had to make a marker on the exact point where she said it and line the two up using a bar.

To cut to the beat which I had to learn to do because this was not required of us last year inserting markers to the beat we used the razor tool to clip where we wanted the clip to cut.

We used various editing tools on on our clips changing the times, colours, contrast and lighting. To find effects we had to press the effects tool bar and for changing the colour had to go to the video filters option which gave us lots to choose from.

In post production I used Photoshop to edit my photos and create the images for my digipak and to create my advertisement. To do this i took photos using my DCLR camera and imported them into a 12 cm by 12 cm file so that it would be the right size when I imported it into Quark express.  After importing the photos I changed the lighting and shadows using the tools.

I used other tools to create boxes and fill them with colour which is what I then put my imported writing on. I used the word tool to create the writing for the inside of my digipak.

After I had created what I wanted to go on each section of my digipak on Photoshop I used Quark express to make it look like the real thing. To do this I had to create a picture box where I wanted to import my picture and then holding command E find the file I wished to import and when I found it press open.

The only other thing I used this programme for was to create a spine where I simply did exactly what I have shown above but rotated it after.

Evaluation question 4.

People's reactions to my groups music video were overall really positive. All the people who were asked said it would meet the requirements of our target audience and said the mise-en-scene and overall tone of the video was really good. The things suggested to improve on was the lip synching & movement of artist in the video. Personally, i do agree that the lip synching could have been a tiny bit better, but i don't think it was completely bad. If i could go back and have more time to edit, I would certainly make sure the video and audio are well synched. I wouldn't have noticed the slight difference in the synching if it hadn't been for the feedback.

Evaluation question 3

Throughout the whole coursework process, i used a lot of different media technologies. for the research, i used the internet and used websites like youtube to research different artists, vimeo to look at previous students work and blogger throughout the whole thing.

For the filming, we had to use the JVC 3CCD camera's. I had sort have forgot how to use them over the summer, as the last time had been for last years coursework module. For the editing, I used final cut pro. I learned to use tools that i didn't use last year during the thriller coursework. This year's coursework was a lot more complex.

I made my digipack on quark express. I thought this was quite tricky to use at first but once i got the hang of it, it was quite easy. I was editing images on photoshop using the tools, and then converting them onto the template on quark express. I added effects to my photo's on both my digipack and my advert, to help tie it together with the music video and make it recognisable.

4) What have you learned from your audience feed back?

A lot of people commented on our cuts. praising how on point they were. This sows our beats were on point with the cuts.
'Your location matches your genre' this audience feedback shows the audience had an understanding of the genre.
when aske is there anything we could improve on many relied 'no' which is a thumbs up.
However somebody did say if we had a few more people in the video it would have looked better. but given the song is about 'blaze; it made sense with just her in it.
over all, great feed back!

3)How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Google allowed me to check for other artist digipak and leaflets.
this a and easy way to get inspirational ides for my own  digipak and leaflet.
it was straight forward and easy to use. I simply typed in what i wanted to search for, it they gave me options , for what kind of search i wanted, i.e:web, image, video, maps, news...

Using a camera we took pictures of our anamatic story board. This is a quick and easy way to capture  our ideas
By using YouTube i was  able to analyse other videos . YouTube also is a great way to get influential ideas.

During our filming stages we had to use a state of the art JVC camera. This was great with lots of different. Along with the camera we used a memory card which stored all our important files (videos, pictures, ect)

Blogger has helped me record what i have been doing step by step. this also enabled me to look back at my work to re fresh my memory and to see where i have improved, where i sill need to improve and what is still left to do.

Evaluation - Question 3

Throughout the project, we were introduced to a number of new media technologies. A lot of them i have used before but with this project it allowed me to use it further my knowledge on the technology.

To film the music video we used brand new state of the art cameras, we used them when filming the opening to thrillers last year but this year, the cameras were handled a lot more as it was important to have a number of different shots for the music video to make editing easier.  When filming it was very important to make sure the cameras were in focus as failing to do this would leave the clips distorted.

Blogger was a big part of documenting the process of the music video and print products, blogger helped to keep track of all the research we had done for the music video. Here is blog of the anamatic that myself and my group made, when coming to film shots for the actual music video it was very helpful to look back on. It is really easy to use blogger, you simply type in the web address which is http://www.blogger.com/ in the search tool then put in the user name and password, scroll down to the group you are in. All the blogs for your group are in the same place each under the persons name, to publish a post youc click new post, write what you want and when you are done simply press publish and it will appear on your groups homepage. You can review your old blogs and change them if needed.

I used internet to research, things about the genre. I used youtube the most, to find videos that inspired myself and my group. We new that we wanted to have a grid panel in this video if something and I new that Examples video for kickstart featured a lot of grids so on youtube we watched the video and thats where we came up with the idea to have a grid for the lips. Relating to genre we searched artists that were the same genre as our song, M.I.A was a big influence influence to us regarding wardrobe and her video Bucky Dun Gun made a big impact with the colour flashes. We used youtube to search for these videos and used related videos to view other music videos of the same genre.

Myself and my group didnt use the green screen, most of our footage was filmed outside either on a plain white wall, under a tunnel and infront of the graffiti sitting on a wall. We was originally going to sue the green screen for a white background, but as we needed to change it white it would of been difficult to cut it out and Sarah would of ended up with a green halo round her head. Which wouldn't of looked good at all.

We made an anamtic before we started filming, we took some photographs of Sarah in some of the shots she would be doing while filming. We didnt stick to the exact same thing as what was in teh anamatic as when it came to filming our  ideas were developing and we decided to change the bit with the traffic withch would have been featured when the chorus was on to the smoking and dancing which was there in the final edit. Creating the anamatic was really easy once we had taken pictures, we put the mp3 of the track - Louder in final cut along with the pictures and it was just a matter of putting the pictures where the shots were going to be in the final music video.

To create my digipak and advert i used photoshop. In class we were shown an introduciton to both photoshop and quark which showed us how to use both programmes properly, after the introduction i decided that i wanetd to use photoshop to create my print products as i found it easier to use and i have used photoshop before so i was more familer with the tools. We were given a template for the digipak which was optional for us to use, i decided to use it so i new exactly where each panel of the digipak was. Once your images are in photoshop it is easy to play about with them and put on different effects on. As i wanted there to be a white brick across the whole of my digipak, i had to make the picture of the wall transparent and lay pictures on top of it so it looked like the image was taken with the wll in the background.

Evaluation Question 2

I tried to portray the artist on the digipack and advertisement as not just a drum and bass/dubstep artist, but a female in the genre. Having them as quite girlie but edgy really makes it affective.

Evaluation question 1

During the planning of the music video, I looked at different artists from the genre our artist is situated. This influenced my overall idea's a lot as it gave me different types of theme's to go by. For example, drum and bass artist Dj Fresh has a really fast paced video, which is edited really well to the beat. When initially choosing a final song, I thought that the song would maybe be a bit tricky to edit well to as it is quite a fast paced song, as with most in the genre. Similar to our song, where the word 'louder' is repeated, the word 'go' is repeated in the song gold dust. I really liked the editing to the beat with each word, and thought this would work really well within my own video. Also, it would help with the editing, and getting it right with the beat. These are the different shots used within the video when there is repetition of the word 'go'.

For my music video we used a grid displaying the same shots, to add to the repetition in the song. We had quite a bit of difficulty cutting to the exact beat, but after a couple of attempts and some shifting of idea's, we came up with this.

My first idea's for the music video was a really urban theme. I really liked the idea of a female, underground artist as there isn't many in todays' charts. As a fan of the genre myself, I loved the thought of graffiti in the video. Which is a conventional to a dubstep/drum&bass video. Ms dynamite & Dj zinc : Wile Out, uses graffiti in the background, giving an urban theme too their video which i tried to incorporate into my video.

When I planned more and really researched I thought that having aspects of the dubstep/drum&bass genre in our video was good, but keeping most of the shots on a white wall, so that we could have less shots but more editing, so we could play around with the shots. For example, Redlight :What you talkin about?

2) How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?
My theme was typical 'chav' who drinks, hardly has any money left after spending it all on booze. Maybe living off parents or in a run down estate. The main similarities and links between my advert, didgipak and video are the position of how 'blaze' 9sarah0 is sitting her hair.

I aim of using the lips is to attract the male audience. However i think this is a great way to attract both male and female audiences. Simply because the females may be attracted by the red lipstick, for the interest of fashion. whereas the male audience may be attracted sexually.

As seen on this screen shot taken from the leading British band N-Dubz. i also Incorporated the use of the blonde hair and red lips.

(considering N-Dubz are so popular and also have a similar age group based audience. )
